The Small Room

A family once rented a room and complained that it was too small.

The people who owned the house thought, 'How dare this family complain about their small room.' So the people asked the family to leave.

The room is now empty--but it is still too small.

When I first became Principal I told this story at the first PTG meeting. My point in telling this story was to show what happens when a community, or in this case a school, doesn’t listen to the needs of those they are serving.

By listening to the needs of all our families we take down the walls that exclude or divide. We expand our potential for success by seeing beyond our current status quo. We welcome change while we embrace all.

St. John Bosco was quoted saying, “Every child sent to our school is here for a reason and sent to us by the Holy Spirit, let us not oppose the Holy Spirit.”

I believe this is true for St. John’s as well. Every child here is here for a blessed reason and sent us by grace.

You see, Catholic Education is different from “Private Schools” in that we can welcome every family, especially Catholic families, regardless of culture, race, economic status, or even special need. As a Catholic School we have a special commitment to Catholic families. Therefore, every Catholic Family regardless of circumstance should have the opportunity to be part of a Catholic Educational Community. Thus, St. John’s can celebrate its diverse nature because we are inclusive of all who make up our community.

The Technology Award that we have just received acknowledges the attempt we are making to expand our ‘room’ to meet the needs of students who are experiencing difficulty with their academics. These students are considered At-Risk. In our culture, a student at risk is any youngster who is not doing well in school. If children are not doing well in school they're at risk of not developing a sense of power and self-esteem.

As parents you are aware how important it is to provide support when your child is in need. As a Catholic School we must do the same for all of our children. This response is called inclusive...it is for this response, made possible by our innovation with our technology, that we are being honored with this National Award.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Willers, Principal (principal@stjohnseagles.com)
