Our History:
St. John School was founded and opened on January 8, 1917 under the charism and spirit of the Ursuline sisters. Through the untiring efforts of Father Lyons, his assistants and the Ursuline sisters, the enrollment of the school rose to two hundred thirty-six students within two years. The first graduation exercises were held with great pride and joy on June 10, 1919. In 1967, a
new school building was completed and opened in the Glen Park district where it remains today. The enrollment at this time was two hundred ninety-four. The grammar school is one mile away from the church and rectory. Despite this separation, the school is a vital part of the parish. St. John School instills the Ursuline tradition in every student.
The Ursuline Sisters are the oldest teaching group in the Catholic Church. They were founded by Saint Angela Merici hundreds of years ago. Saint Angela was born in Italy and at the age of 60 called together a group of 28 women who were passionate of giving the gift of education to young women.
St. John School strives to give the gift of education to each individual student through service and compassion. Creating a community environment and involving families in their child's education is what makes St. John School is unique and special school because this where community matters.
